India’s space agency, ISRO, has provided a major update regarding its ambitious SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment) mission. Originally scheduled for 7th January, the highly anticipated space docking experiment has now been postponed to 9th January, as shared by ISRO on its social media platform ‘X’. This mission aims to demonstrate a crucial space docking technology that will be pivotal for India’s future space projects.

What is Space Docking Technology?

Space docking technology refers to the process of joining two space vehicles in orbit, which has vast implications for India’s space ambitions. This technology is essential for transferring materials, equipment, and even humans between spacecraft. On 30th December, ISRO successfully launched the SpaDeX mission using the PSLV-C60 rocket. This mission deployed two small satellites, SDX 01 (Chaser) and SDX 02 (Target), into a 475 km orbit. These two satellites, weighing around 220 kg, are specifically designed to demonstrate the space docking technology. Through this experiment, ISRO intends to show the process of docking two space vehicles in orbit, a significant milestone for India’s space capabilities.
